A gold color metal and enamel device 1 1/8 inches (2.86 cm) in width and 1 1/16 inches (2.70 cm) in height, consisting of a flaming torch above a breast plate and jupon in front of a rattlesnake on a green background, grasping in its mouth at upper right and with its tail at upper left the ends of an encircling scroll inscribed "THIS WE'LL DEFEND" in black letters, between thirteen black stars, seven on the left and six on the right.
The snake, the motto and scroll, and the armor are elements adapted from the design on the U.S. Army Flag and the Seal of the Department of the Army. They represent this country's readiness to defend itself. The torch of liberty shines overall from the top of the design and the thirteen stars on the scroll allude to the nation's beginning. The background is the new Army Green.
The distinctive unit insignia was approved for wear by trainer personnel assigned to U.S. Army Training Activities on 15 January 1958. Wear was extended to personnel of the U.S. Army Training Center, Caribbean on 27 May 1960.
